Question about PIO injections

My current doctor mentioned that we should call PPVI and discuss getting off progesterone supplements since, in her experience, by this time she usually has her patients stop.

But she was also understanding and said that we can continue to do what PPVI says, but she still mentioned stopping progesterone.

So my question is, how long did you take PIO injections or the ever so lovely suppositories?

I am having my progesterone drawn up and shipped to Omaha on Monday, so I'm curious to see what it'll be.

It continues to rise, although it's a slow and steady trek, I'm thankful it's going up and not down.

I know my doctor here will only do what's best and what she has experience with, however I was wondering what PPVI does-seeing as there views of progesterone are quite different from other doctors (I don't know how many I read have women stopping at 11 weeks or so because the placenta takes over...).

I am going to call PPVI after I get my results next week to get an idea, but...that's a few days away and I'm curious to know what y'all have done.

Thanks again for your advice in advance!

I was on until 38 weeks. PPVI won't take you off unless you stay in zone 4 for a while, and maintain at that level on the 100 shots. We IF girls tend to have big swings in prog levels out of the blue that can cause preterm labor, so PPVI is much more cautious than regular docs. HTH! - Renee

I was on them until 35 weeks per PPVI. My OB wanted to stop at 12 weeks, but was understanding so I kept taking the shots. Good luck!

Follow with PPVI says. Main stream doctors, including mine, just don't get it. PPVI has done tons of research on this and they know what they are doing. I'm 24 weeks and still on them. Been hanging out in zone 2 since 12 weeks.

Just do whatever ppvi says :) I stopped at 8 weeks with my first pregnancy but am still taking the pills at 11 weeks right now. There is no harm in continuing, no risk at all, so just keep it up!

I think I went until 32 weeks during the first pregnancy. On them again this time around, too. My levels varied between the zones a lot, so I had a lot of fluctuation of dosing from the 100, 200 +/- suppositories, you get the drift. I found it reassuring to be on it so long because I figured it helped keep preterm labor at bay. Progesterone is a smooth muscle relaxer so it keeps the uterus nice and calm ;-)

Until 37 weeks. Us PCOS gals especially need the extra progesterone boost.

My OB (non-Napro) hadn't heard of people being on progesterone past 1st trimester, but she was also willing to let me stay on because that's what I was comfortable with. She finally just stopped asking if I was still getting the shots.

My levels were all over the place...huge dips in 2nd tri. What I'm saying is, stay on them!

Definitely stick with what PPVI says. I was on it until they told me to stop, which was around 36 weeks. I got to stop early b/c my levels were good, I think most people have to do them til 37 or 38 weeks. Most "regular" docs will tell you that after the 1st trimester there's no need for progesterone, but that's not true--it helps prevent against premature labor also. Those shots aren't fun but they are worth it!

Just tell her you stopped. :)

At 13 weeks my progesterone skyrocketed, so my NaPro MC discontinued the prog. supp. (I did not do PIO). I am not sure what I would have done if we kept going as I am sure my regular OB would not have loved/understood if we had continued. I might have tried to delve more into NaPro or get him in touch with my NaPro MC even. But ultimately, regardless of what my regular OB said, had my NaPro MC wanted me on progesterone, I would have stayed on it!

p.s. I am currently at 35 weeks and no signs of pre-term labor. So my levels at 13 (and 15 weeks) must have been great (and honestly, I could tell the levels were high because everything about the pregnancy changed very suddenly around 13 weeks, and I felt great). BUT do what PPVI says, for sure.

Stick with what PPVI says. I was on them through 37 weeks and will definitely do the same (based on levels of course) if I am lucky enough to get pregnant again.

I agree with Sew...they are so stupid. They dont know progesterone. My OB (non-napro)basically told me that my napro MD was an idiot to keep me on it. I was on it until 30-somethings weeks.

Stick with PPVI. My midwives are confused but supportive-they've never heard of taking it past the 1st tri either. I took Prometrium only with my 3rd pregnancy until 14 weeks. With my second, I took shots & pills until 25 weeks, then just pills until 27.

I was on PIO injections until 37 weeks. I never went over zone 2, and my numbers were always going up and down from zone one to two...so don't freak out (too much) if that happens. Hopefully, you'll never even experience that!

Thanks for the advice ladies. I will definitely be following the advice of PPVI. One would think all doctors should understand the importance of progesterone. Oh well, I'm def grateful 1)my doctor is ok with me working with PPVI and 2)I'm working with PPVI :)
